Ghana's New Visa System in 2026: Everything You Need to Know Before You Travel

Ghana Net: 04th July 2026 - This information is part of our mission to offer you accurate and up-to-date travel insights for Ghana, especially since official tourism portals such as gmmb.gov.gh have been hacked or are currently suspended, like ghana.travel. Akwaaba! Welcome!

Planning a trip to Ghana? Whether you're dreaming of exploring Cape Coast, discovering Accra's vibrant nightlife, reconnecting with your heritage, or heading to Ghana for business, there's one major update you shouldn't miss.

Ghana has modernised its visa system, making it possible for many travellers to apply completely online. But that's not the whole story. Traditional visa applications are still available, new rules apply to African passport holders, and one important document remains absolutely essential.

Here's everything you need to know before booking your flight.

Ghana eVisa: Apply Online Without Sending Your Passport

The biggest change is the introduction of the official Ghana eVisa and Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).

For many travellers, this means saying goodbye to printing stacks of paperwork or mailing your passport to an embassy.

Instead, you can now:

  • Complete your application entirely online
  • Upload all supporting documents digitally
  • Pay securely online
  • Receive your approved electronic visa directly by email

Your passport stays with you throughout the process.

Ghana eVisa Processing Times

The online system is surprisingly quick.

Standard Processing

  • Approximately 96 hours (4 days)

Express Processing

  • Around 5 hours for urgent travel

If you're booking a last-minute trip, the express service can be a real lifesaver.

Ghana eVisa Fees

The new online visa is designed for convenience, but it comes at a premium price.

Current fees are:

  • Single-entry tourist visa: US$260
  • Multiple-entry visa: US$468
  • Express (5-hour) processing: US$442

While the price is higher than many destinations, the convenience of a fully digital application is a significant advantage for many travellers.

Can You Still Apply Through the Ghana High Commission in London, Washington, Embassy Berlin etc?

Yes—you absolutely can.

If you prefer the traditional route or require a visa sticker inside your passport, the Ghana High Commission in London continues to process visa applications.

There are two options available.

Postal Visa Applications

Applicants can:

  • Complete the application online
  • Pay the visa fee electronically
  • Print the completed forms
  • Send the documents together with their physical passport by post

Processing usually takes 10–15 working days.

Premium Application Centre

Need your visa more quickly?

The Ghana Premium Application Centre in London offers in-person appointments and can often issue a passport-stamped visa in approximately 3 days, to pick up. (return to center, or by their post system, which is an additional cost of around 35 Pounds)

This remains a popular choice for travellers who prefer a traditional visa in their passport.

Ghana Entry Requirements: What Every Traveller Must Have

Whether you choose the new eVisa or the traditional embassy application, Ghana's entry requirements remain the same.

Your Passport Must Be Valid

Your passport should:

  • Be valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date
  • Contain at least one to two blank visa pages

Without this, your application may be refused.

Yellow Fever Vaccination Is Still Mandatory

This is one requirement that hasn't changed.

Every eligible traveller must have a valid Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate.

When applying online, you'll need to upload a digital copy.

When arriving in Ghana, you'll also need to carry the original yellow vaccination card, as health officials may ask to see it at Accra International Airport.

Travellers who cannot present proof of vaccination may experience delays or even be denied entry (However, they might give you that vaccine at a cost).

Documents You'll Need for Your Ghana Visa

To complete your application successfully, prepare the following documents in advance:

  • A valid passport
  • Recent passport-sized digital photograph
  • Return or onward flight itinerary
  • Confirmed hotel booking or accommodation details
  • If staying with friends or family: an invitation letter plus a copy of your host's valid Ghanaian ID

Having everything ready before starting your application can help avoid unnecessary delays.

Important Changes for African Passport Holders

One of the biggest policy updates affects travellers from across Africa.

All African Union passport holders travelling for tourism or business are now required to apply using the new online eVisa platform.

The previous Visa on Arrival arrangement for many African travellers has been discontinued.

The good news?

Visa fees are completely waived.

Eligible African passport holders pay US$0, although they must still complete the online application before travelling.

Who Doesn't Need a Visa for Ghana?

Some travellers can continue entering Ghana completely visa-free.

This includes citizens of countries that have reciprocal visa-waiver agreements with Ghana, including:

  • ECOWAS member states
  • Selected Caribbean nations
  • Other countries covered by bilateral agreements

If your nationality qualifies, no visa application is required before travel.

Thoughts

Ghana's new electronic visa system marks one of the country's biggest travel updates in recent years. however, Togo also introduced their new eVisa system..

For most international visitors, the process is now faster, more convenient, and completely digital. At the same time, traditional embassy applications remain available for travellers who prefer a passport-stamped visa.

Whichever option you choose, remember the essentials: make sure your passport is valid, prepare your supporting documents, and don't forget your Yellow Fever vaccination certificate.

A little preparation before departure means you can spend less time worrying about paperwork—and more time looking forward to experiencing the warmth, culture, incredible food, and unforgettable hospitality that make Ghana one of Africa's most rewarding destinations.
