A comprehensive, region- and city-organized list of recognized public and private museums in Ghana, compiled from the Ghana Museums & Monuments Board and other reputable sources (as of mid-2025). The list will include the region, city, museum name, year of establishment (where available), and a brief description of each museum.

Greater Accra Region (Accra area)

  • National Museum of Ghana – Accra (opened March 5 1957). Main national museum: archaeology, ethnography, art 

  • Museum of Science and Technology (MST) – Accra (est. 1963). Focus on Ghana’s scientific and technological development

  • Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park & Mausoleum (Museum) – Accra. Dedicated to Ghana’s first president and Pan‑Africanist leader 

  • W. E. B. Du Bois Centre (Du Bois Memorial Centre for Pan‑African Culture) – Accra. Research and exhibition centre on Du Bois’s work and African‑American history voltaregionalmuseum.ghana-net.com

  • Cape Coast Castle Museum – Cape Coast (est. 1974). Slave‑trade museum housed in the castle wings.

  • St. George’s Castle (Elmina Castle) Museum – Elmina (est. 1997). Exhibitions on slave trade and local history inside the fort.

  • Gramophone Records Museum and Research Centre of Ghana (GRMRC) – Cape Coast (opened Dec 1994). Focused on Highlife music recordings and Ghanaian audio heritage

  • Armed Forces Museum (Kumasi Fort Museum) – Kumasi (converted to museum 1953). Military history and Anglo‑Ashanti conflict exhibits 

  • Nurom Hat Museum – Kumasi (est. 1960). Collections of hats from around the world in Kumasi

Notes and Highlights

  • This list includes the eight main public museums under the Ghana Museums & Monuments Board plus several regional museums and selected private/heritage museums voltaregionalmuseum.ghana-net.comghana-net.com

  • Some museums (like the Yaa Asantewaa Museum) have ongoing reconstruction or limited opening status. The Yaa Asantewaa site was destroyed by fire in 2004 and reconstruction was funded in 2016; its full reopening remains pending Wikipedia.

  • Private art spaces (e.g. Nubuke Foundation, ADA) offer exhibitions and events but may not be typical museums.
