Bongo - District capital in the Upper East region of Ghana
Bongo is not only an interesting district town on its own, due many traditional buildings, included the chiefs house, but comes also with an really fantastic landscape, which leaves in some areas an impression of 1.000.000 before Christ, as God created Earth.

The people of Bongo are friendly, as the whole area. There are 2 large rocks particular of interest, for hiking or climbing. (Please ask a local tour guide, to take you around!)
Best to ask is Toni, at the pharmacy store in the town centre. One of the rocks offers great views around on top of a "mushroom" platform, the other rock has an unexplored underwater cave system, with a christian cross on top. |
If you know the Saxon Swizz in Germany, then you know a bit, what to expect. Bongo area is of stunning beauty. Visiting Bongo during the rain season will give you an extra attraction. A swelling river, connecting to the Wea Dam and lake.
Bongo as Upper East is home to the mighty Boab Trees, with rocks spread all over, traditional houses build within. Usually late November / December or January, there are fire festivals and other activities. Bongo has one of the large traditional markets twice per Week, but there are other local markets in villages around Bongo. |
Great for people, who are interested in local and traditional hand crafted souvenirs, as example Bongo Baskets (also known as "Bolga Baskets". Actually is Bongo district the main source of "Bolga Baskets". When buying directly from the makers, you will not only save money, but support local farmers and basket makers. Bongo and the surrounding markets are the base for the buyers, who come even from Accra, Burkina Faso and Togo.
We recommend a visit to the Paramount chief of Bongo and traditional area, greeting and introducing yourself, as this would be regarded as very polite gesture according to local traditions. Take a small gift with you, if possible.
You find the chief house is directly in the centre of Bongo, not far from the TroTro station and Bongo market. Bongo is also a transit town, for travelers going to or coming from Burkina Faso. The beliefs of the population is mixed; Christian and Muslims, but there are also still traditional beliefs within (different gods). Wildlife; There are as usual in Upper East some snakes, include Boas. |
There have have been rare sightings of Elephants, monkeys and even lions. Ask locals to show you the foot imprint of an elephant. (now solid rock)
Eating out; There are some local small restaurants "Shop-Bars", offering all kind of minerals, beer and so on. Food is available, but you might have to wait some time, as they prepare food freshly. When invited for food, according to custom use the right hand only, when eating.
If you got an visa for Burkina Faso - visit the large market in Burkina, near the border. A very unique experience. A trading hot spot, with vendors and buyers from many parts of West Africa.

Accommodation; There is nearby an World Vision guesthouse, please ask locally. Prices are quiet reasonable and will support World Vision projects in Upper East. Other accommodations are also available, but again - you might even ask the chief for an advise. Otherwise, Bolgatanga is just about 15 km from Bongo and there are a few good choices. The Catholic Guesthouse in the city centre or the Blue Sky Hotel, for more comfort.
Recommended - Take with you; some small gifts for children. Solar charger and torch light, for yourself... Have toilet tissue in your bag, maybe some disinfection for your hands. There are some public toilets, but usually no toilet tissue. (Guesthouses have toilets and tissue :-)
Health; Beside a larger pharmacy in the town centre, you will find the Bongo District Hospital nearby. Bolgatanga has an larger hospital, with emergency unit. Please be aware that temperature during midday can rise to even 40 Celsius. November and December and sometimes January, when the harmattan wind blows, the temperatures can drop to 20 Celsius.
