Because of the barrier mountain range just to the north, the rail-system does not yet go further to the north. Founder of the National Cultural Centre, KumasiDr. Alexander Atta Yaw Kyeremanten (1916- 1976), the First Directo
He was the founder of the Centre for National Culture in Ghana. His ideas were mostly influenced by factors in the general socio-political and cultural context around his time. He felt the urgent need for preservation of our heritage not only in writing but in such concrete forms as Museum, Zoo, Archives, Architecture, Threatres, Traditional Music and Dance, Drama Groups and many others, all to be located at one place- at Culture Centre, to educate those within and outside the academia. Among the most prominent institutions and individuals involved in financing the Cultural Centre idea during the formative period were the Ford Foundation, Ashanteman Council of Chiefs, Dr. Alec Vider (Dean, Kings College Cambridge) and many others. 1963, the Ashanti Cultural Centre was given national status symbol as “Ghana National Cultural Centre “at the instigation of the late Dr. Kwame Nkrumah first President of Ghana, to reawaken indigenous values. This new phase of the Cultural Centre gave impetus to the cultural revival that promoted Ghanaian cultural practices as everyday life and integrated them into contemporary political and social institutions. The Cultural Centre therefore became a forerunner in the cultural movement of the post-independence era in sub-Saharan Africa, which sought to define and foster a new communal consciousness rooted in the past that would promote nationhood through cultural symbols and metaphors.
Since 1990, when the National Commission on Culture mooted the Centre be called Centre for National Culture, as indeed are the Cultural Centres in the other regions in Ghana. As it is distinctive condition of human beings seeking condition of meaningful understanding of one’s culture that we wish to connect our readers with the symbols of the past to educate the future. You are warmly welcome to the Cultural Centre in Ashanti any time you pay a visit to Kumasi. |
