- 1998 (23 January): Died of "natural causes", but was left without support of the government of John Rawlings, driving even an old car, which was donated by friends. It is a shameful time, of Ghana history! He always will be remembered!
"Rawlings handed him a state burial in 1998 in his home town Gwollu; kufuor corroborated it by renovating the grave site which now serves as a tourist site. All these beautiful efforts by the two contrasting political traditions, though commendable in my candid and honest opinion, is but piecemeal, cosmetic, window dressing and a deliberate attempt to blindfold the good people of this country from the scorn and virtual neglect heaped on this noble gentleman—Limann."

Source: Daily Guide Ghana/ 14.12.2008 - Bakari Limann (right) with his brothers Bakari Limann, junior brother of the ill-treated former president of Ghana, Dr. Hilla Liman, has cautioned all genuine members of the People's National Convention (PNC) against voting for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Professor John Evans Atta Mills in Sunday's run-off, saying it will be ungrateful to do so.
According to him, the soul of the former president would never be happy with any such decision on the part of members of the party who would stab their leader in the back.
“The body of my brother will turn in his grave if any genuine member of the PNC votes for the party that maltreated and humiliated him even to his grave”, he said.
President Liman, whose tenure of office was abruptly truncated by a coup d'etat led by Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings, founder of the NDC, in the name of the 31st December revolution, was kept under house arrest for several years after his overthrow, and for fifteen years, had his passport seized even though no adverse finding was made about him.
Rawlings' Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) government eleven years later metamorphosed into the National Democratic Congress (NDC) under the same man in the Fourth Republic, but the civilian administration did not treat him any better.
When he took ill at a prime age, not even appeals by his family to release his travel documents to him so he could receive treatment abroad were heeded.
The mistreatment of the royal from Gwollu in the Upper West Region must have dictated the distaste the family has for the largest opposition party.
Speaking from Limann's graveside in Gwollu, Bakari Limann, a junior brother of the former president emotionally appealed to all genuine members of the PNC to reject the advances of the NDC because they were the very party that overthrew the party's leader on bogus allegations, ill-treated him and disgraced him till his death.
He made the passionate appeal to all genuine members of the PNC on the premise that voting to bring the party that toppled their leader would hurt him in his grave.
According to him, the family was shocked when they heard that some people are flirting with the NDC in spite of all what was visited on them by the Rawlings regime.
“It just beats my mind to hear some PNC members declaring in Accra their support for Professor Mills. They seem to forget too soon that it was for these reasons that both the family and the party unanimously rejected the state burial offered by the NDC after they allowed him to die so miserably. I urge the party to, out of principle, reject the NDC,” he said.
He said instead of the NDC, PNC members should throw their weight behind the NPP candidate, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, because according to him NPP members are more humane and thoughtful going by the courtesies they offered former president Rawlings, who could not extent same to Liman.
“They even accorded my brother respect in his grave by the befitting tombstone they placed on his head,” he stated.
The overthrow of Dr. Liman and the reasons given for it became a matter of controversy as some living architects of the junta are claiming they were misled by Rawlings.
At a book launch in Accra on Monday, Ex-Cpl. Mathew Adabuga told the media that the former president mislead him into organizing the coup that overthrew President Hilla Liman.
He said after he had lied to him and a number of soldiers from the northern part of the country that Limann needed them to save his administration by organizing a cosmetic coup, Rawlings had demonstrated that he does not have what it takes to heal the country.
At the time of his death, Limann, virtually poor, was driving an old Nissan Pick-up donated to him by the Baptist Mission, while and the government of the day failed to even pay for his medical expenses which could have saved his life.
