Safety and Comfort Tips - Traveling Ghana
Travel Advise: Female visitors to Ghana (Africa generally), try and have always a partner/close friend on your site. NEWS from & about Ghana
Areas to avoid, when travelling alone: OSU - Oxford Street (Accra). Very PENETRATIVE "Souvenir" vendors! The same applies to Labadi "La Pleasure" Beach! Prices for whatever item there, are up to 10 times HIGHER, than at other locations! Very often, when vendors are turned down, they will offer the item as a "Free Gift", to make you feel guilty! DON`T go for this...!
OSU and Labadi Beach """Resort""" are the worst places for white visitors, regarding verbal harassment, whiles walking or even just sitting there. We recommend strongly, to visit this places ONLY with a LOCAL friend, who know how to guide you trough! Labadi Beach: Entrance fee; 5 Cedis weekdays, 10 Cedis from Friday afternoon and Weekend. Prices for food and drink are generally double than usual. Swimming there will not bring much pleasure, as the sea carries lots of blag plastic bags and other rubbish! The best beaches in Ghana are in the Western region and some in the Central region of Ghana.
Shopping at the extended MACOLA market - Very busy, loud and crowded street and shop market! Please visit the market with a friend or an approved local guide (from your hotel or guesthouse, business eventually). There are many items and local hand crafted products far cheaper, than in "tourist" areas! Photography? Please don`t! Vendors might become verbally rough! Rather use a secret mini camera, and have fun!
Shoprite (South African owned) - The new shopping centers offer reasonable prices, far better than Koala (OSU). MELCOM (Ghanaian owned) is an other good option!
But, the new and best option for quality and lower prices, also and especially WESTERN food (Milk, Cheese etc): CITYDIA (Spainish Supermarket chain) is very recommended, as their prices are reasonable!
TAXI - The same applies, when taking a TAXI! Foreigners will always be ask, to pay at least 3 times, as much! Never accept the first price! Agreeing to an EXACT route, and price! Usually, a Taxi from OSU to Labadi should NOT be more, than 15 Ghana Cedis, to the airport NOT more than 20 Ghana Cedis. A taxi from OSU to Aburi, Kokrobite beach (near Kasoa, Tema should not be more than 50 Ghana Cedis. Usually no more than 40 Ghana Cedis. Taxi from Accra to Cape Coast (example Cape Coast or even Elmina Castle) no more than 280 Ghana Cedis. That`s even calculated generous! Some taxi drivers will ask you for even 150 - 200 Cedis from Accra to PramPram! That`s far too much! 90 - 120 Cedis is generous! Also keep in mind, that the majority of the taxi-cars can not be compared to western road safety and quality standards. (As of May 2017, and has not much changed 2019, January)
TroTro - Getting around Accra, one of the many TroTro is a low cost option. From Tema Station (example) to Tema or Ashaiman cost about 3 - 4 Cedis. There are also some state owned Metro busses (modern and low cost), around Accra. We do NOT recommend these TroTro, when traveling out of Accra! (Safety and comfort)
ATM - Money - If you are with example Barclays Bank, use their ATM`s in Ghana! No extra charges, and you can see your account summary even in Ghana Cedis! Ghana. Some other ATM`s have started, charging extra, as of May 2017, up to 15 Ghana Cedis! Watch out. So that you`ll have just the reasonable exchange and usual foreign transaction fees of your bank at home. But, if you like to be on the safe side, ask within the bank, before using their ATM. Barclays customers and card holder pay no fees, when accessing a Barclays cash machine! Additionaly, you are able to see your statement in Ghana Cedi, daily updated exchange rate)
Safety - When taking money from a any ATM, please make sure, it is good day time and you are not "alone in the dark". If you use ATM`s at banks, there is normally SECURITY staff around. Very recommended for safety: Barclay's Bank (always security guards around!)!
Last, but not least: TOILETS! Please keep in mind, that you`ll hardly find any decent toilet! Hotels and good restaurants are mostly the only option! .... Read More About Ghana
