Volta Lake Ferry at Lake Volta, Akosombo port, Ghana
Akosombo - Home to the Lake Volta ferry to Northern Ghana
An adventure of something special, every back-packer-tourist is dreaming of; Booking a cabin on, as example, the Yapei Queen. The cruise will be take all together about 2 days, taking you to Northern Ghana. (If you book the full tour to Yeji.) There are some stops between you final destination. It is recommended, to book in advance, as cabins are limited. The ferry leaves up to 2 times per Week from Akosombo port. Usually Monday afternoon, at 4.30 pm. Be at least one hour earlier there, to accommodate with the ferry and to buy your tickets. Prices are very reasonable. Lake Volta is the largest reservoir by surface area in the world, and the fourth largest one by water volume. It is located completely within the country of Ghana, and it has a surface area of about 8,502 km² (3,275 square miles). The lake's north most point is close to the town of Yapei, and its south-most extreme is at the Akosombo Dam, 520 kilometers downstream from Yapei. |
The volta ferry “Yapei Queen” starts every Monday around 4.30 pm at the landing in Akosombo. The port lies about 10 minutes from Akosombo town. There are two "first" class cabins (if you need privacy), located on the upper deck.
Standard tickets - Once on board, you can choose between a bench in a crowded “dorm” on the lower or first deck or put your blankets on the roofed, but open top deck. Usually, travelers prefer the inside dorms. The top outside deck however, take some warm clothes and blankets with you – it gets cold during the night! During the trip, food is provided by a small kitchen, cold beverages included. Bathrooms are located on each deck. The one on the top deck was okay, however also used by the crew.

The ferry might stop at Kpando – also during rainy season. Otherwise the first stop, after 15 hours is Kete Kretchi. After Kete Kretchi, the “Yapei Queen” continues to its final stop at Yeji. Which usually takes another 15 hours.
The trip is adventurous, but definitely worth it: "Yapei Queen" passes small islands under a magnificent sky full of stars. You can see the landscape changing as you head further north. The air is refreshing and it is a great feeling to slow down on your travel pace.
