Important landmark of Ghana.
Adomi Bridge . Spans the Volta River that drains into the Gulf of Guinea, south of the Akosombo Dam.
It is a two-hinged steel arch bridge with a deck suspended by cables. It was designed in 1956 and completed in 1957 by William Brown, of the engineers Freeman Fox & Partners |
How to get to Atimpoku
The town can be accessed from all parts of Ghana. Accra the capital of Ghana is about 65 kilometres from Atimpoku and Tema is also 50 kilometres away. These two cities are well linked to Atimpoku by the Accra - Tema motorway, and from Tema to Akosombo via highway, passing shortly after Tema the Shai Hills Resource Reserve and Krobo mountains. There are local “TroTro” mini buses available, from Tema and / or Accra.
However, if you start you trip from the north of Ghana and you will have to go through the eastern corridor and you will cross over the Adomi Bridge. The bridge is linking the Eastern region and the Volta region of Ghana.
Traveling to Akosombo (from Tema centre about 76 km), the bridge will be on your right hand side. Akosombo port; Trave further by ferry to Northern Ghana. You may take your car (small), on the ferry. Travel time about 30 hours, via Lake Volta.

Adomi bridge rehabilitation 80% complete
7/26/2015 Rehabilitation works on the Adomi Bridge at Atimpoku in the Asuogyaman District in the Eastern Region is nearing completion. Engineers of Bilfinger MCE GmbH of Austria who are working on the project said the work was 82 percent complete, and it would be handed over to the government in November. This came to light when a delegation from the Association of Building and Civil Engineering Contractors of Ghana (ABCECG) paid a working visit to the site last Thursday. |
The visit was to enable the delegation to know the progress of work at first hand, as well as what was left to be done.
The bridge was closed in March last year for rehabilitation. Lack of maintenance on the 335m bridge, which was built in 1955 and opened to traffic in 1957, led to the collapse of one of the steel beams supporting it. Two others also developed serious cracks later on, resulting in a depression on a section of the bridge. The bridge connects parts of the Eastern Region and Juapong in the North Tongu District, Ho, Hohoe and other towns in the Volta Region. The Project Manager of Bilfinder MCE GmbH, Dr Paul Hermann, who briefed the delegation, said the entire bridge deck had been replaced with a new one. He explained that the bridge deck was in five pieces that were welded together before it was launched. |
Even though the old deck was made of concrete on steel, Dr Herman said the new bridge would be of asphalt on steel as the concrete was much heavier.
He said when maintained well the bridge could last for more than 100 years.
The Resident Engineer, Mr Victor Nyantakyi-Baah, said, at the moment the engineers were working on corrosion protection.

He said the two walkways on each side of the bridge would, however, be made of concrete on steel and also a new tollbooth would be sited about 1.2 kilometres from the bridge.
Mr Nyantakyi-Baah said an inspection platform would be fixed under the bridge to detect any defects that might develop on the bridge, adding that some local engineers had been trained to handle any defects, if any, in the future. The President of the ABCECG, Mr Martins Kwasi Nnuro, expressed satisfaction with the progress of work made on the bridge. |
He advised drivers, particularly of trucks, to maintain a maximum weight of 11.5 tons in order to maintain the bridge for effective use and called on the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) to put in place a monitoring mechanism to check the load weights of vehicles using the bridge to protect its lifespan.
Further, Mr Nnuro requested that the Ministry of Water Works and Housing, the Ministry of Roads and Highway and the Ghana Highway Authority should collaborate with the association to further develop the construction industry.

Adomi Bridge opens in September
5/26/2015 Source: Daily Guide Ghana - The Adomi Bridge will be opened for use in September, President John Mahama announced this during the inauguration of a fibre optic broadband infrastructure laid along the country’s eastern corridor. This means that the bridge which spans the Volta River and connects the Volta Region and parts of the Eastern Region to other parts of the country will be completed a month ahead of the October deadline. The president said the contractor was speeding up work. In March this year, the Adomi Bridge was closed down for extensive repair works; a project the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) has estimated to cost Ghana €13 million. Following the closure of the bridge located at Atimpoku, drivers and passengers were faced with various problems in their bid to move to the Volta Region and some parts of the Eastern Region which is cut off from the rest of the country by the Volta River. |
The bridge was originally designed by Sir William Halcrow and partners and Freeman Fox and partners and built by Dorman Long Bridge Engineering Limited in 1957.
The repair works is, however, being done by Messrs Bilfinger MCE GmbH of Austria who has so far executed about 78 percent of the work in 14 months.
The repair works covers the replacement of the entire bridge deck of 23 sections. As at last month, 22 of them had been replaced. Each bridge deck, prefabricated in Austria, comes in five pieces, but they are welded together as one before it is launched.
The bridge will now have an inspection platform fixed under the bridge. The platform which will work hydraulically can also be operated at sections to detect any defects that might develop on the bridge.
This feature is to avert the difficulty in detecting faults in the past. An improvised lift fabricated at the project site has been fixed on the bridge to enable artisans to move up the arch and work on the replacement of the hanger cables.

Adomi Bridge rehabilitation progressing steadily
2/14/2015 Source: Daily Graphic Ghana - Rehabilitation works on the Adomi Bridge at Atimpoku in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region is progressing steadily. The contractor, Messrs Bilfinger MCE GmbH of Austria, has so far executed about 67 per cent of the work in 11 months. During a visit to the site last Wednesday, the Resident Engineer on the project, Mr Victor Nyantekyi Baah, expressed the hope that the bridge would be handed over to the government by the deadline of October. |
The project started in March last year following the closure of the bridge and a relaunch of ferry services at Senchi and Akrade, two communities also in the Asuogyaman District.
The 56-year-old bridge serves as a critical connection between some parts of the Eastern Region and Juapong in the North Tongu District, Ho, Hohoe and other towns in the Volta Region.
The contractor is replacing the entire bridge deck with a new one. There are 23 sections and currently 21 of them have already been replaced.
Each bridge deck, prefabricated in Austria, comes in five pieces, but they are welded together before it is launched. Also, 10 hanger cables had been replaced with the 11th and 12th cables being worked on. There are 40 hanger cables in all, each of which comes in two pairs.
Even though the old deck was made of concrete on steel, Mr Baah said the new bridge would be of asphalt on steel as the concrete was much heavier.
The two walkways on each side of the bridge would, however, be made of concrete on steel.
A new tollbooth would now be sited about 1.2 kilometres from the bridge.
A new feature, an inspection platform, would now be fixed under the bridge. The inspection platform, according to Mr Baah, would work hydraulically and could be operated at sections to detect any defects that might develop on the bridge.
He said the lack of this feature on the old bridge made such detections rather difficult.
Also, an improvised lift fabricated at the project site enables some of the artisans to move up the arch and work on the replacement of the hanger cables.
Under the contract, the government is required to give tax exemptions to the contractor but the Project Manager, Mr Paul Herrmann, said the company was yet to receive the Tax Exemption Certificate.
"This exemption, which we don't have, is one of the challenges we are facing, causing us expenses we are not prepared for," he stated.
According to him, the company had as at October last year paid more than GH¢100,000 in taxes to the state.
Meanwhile, the two ferries which were launched prior to the closure of the bridge are still operational and the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) has completed construction works on the Akuse-Old Akrade road which provides access from Akuse junction through the Volta River Authority ( VRA) Dam.
