The Atiwa Forest, located in the Eastern Region, and among the 260 forest reserves in the country, is one of the largest remaining blocks of tropical forests and one of the healthiest and important ecosystems in West Africa. Environmental organizations renewed their calls on government to stop all mining and prospecting activities in the Atiwa Forest Reserve due to its dire repercussions on the country.
The environmental groups said the Atiwa Forest delivered a variety of ecosystem service and other benefits that superseded whatever financial gains the country may be derived from mining bauxite in the forest. Pictures of what appears to be ‘starving’ lions at the Achimota Forest Zoo have gone viral on social media, prompting members of the public to raise concerns about the welfare of animals in Ghana.
In one of the photos available to DAILY GUIDE, the lions appear so lean that members of the public are alleging that they are being starved at the Achimota Zoo by the officials. Jamaica's Minister of Tourism, Hon. Edmund Bartlett and the Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Hon. Olivia Grange have jointly endorsed the “Year of Return, Ghana 2019”.
The Year of Return is an initiative of the government of Ghana which is intended to encourage people of African descent to visit Ghana. Ambassador Arriola said Ghana’s tourism sector has the potential to attract the numbers. “If you have service quality, standards, transportation, roads, airport, clean beaches and your castles; and I don’t think many countries has the kind of Forts and Castles you have and that alone can bring in all the Tourists”. AGAFEST belongs to Ghanaians so Ghana must use our taxpayers' money to sponsor. The ministry must be able to sponsor AGAFEST which belongs to and owned by Ghanaians. The founder of the annual Africa Gospel Awards Festival (AGAFEST), Prince Mackay has called on the government of Ghana to support the gospel award scheme with a sum of 1 million US dollars.
The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has announced that key tourist sites in the country will receive a face lift within the short to medium term this year.
The announcement comes at a time the CNN has ranked Ghana forth out of nineteen countries as top destinations in the world to visit this year. The campaign was launched by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at America's National Press Club in Washington, DC, in September 2018. About half a million Africans in the Diaspora are expected to arrive in the country to take part in “The Year of Return Ghana 2019”, a historic campaign to mark the end of 400 years of the slave trade in Ghana.
According to the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), out of the number, 350,000 participants would come from North America, while the rest would come from the Caribbean, South America and Europe. |
